“Who is Sachin Tendulkar?“
India went berserk, their demigod had just lost his legitimacy. Sharapova was called names- dumb and idiots being the descent ones. Now life has come full circle. Kailash Satyarthi from India won the Nobel peace prize jointly with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan. Time has come to look around and check how many of us know about this Indian star? Even better, look within. Being very candid I didn’t know him till his shot to fame. My reaction was akin to many of my countrymen. Aakhir kya cheez hai ye Satyarthi. I am smart enough to pass on the blame, an art mastered by our politicians. I blamed Maria then and I will make media the scape-goat this time. We will get back to the blame game. We are inherently hard wired to put the blame on someone and I would not digress from this custom.
But the main objective of this blog post is not so much to push the media to the ghettos as it is to introduce our Noble laureate to you. Kailash Satyarthi is a child activist and one of the torch bearers against child labor. In 1980, he founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan . His organization and he in his personal capacity have helped more than 83000 children form 144 countries. He has won many National and International awards including Nobel peace Prize of 2014.
Coming back to media, given the impact of Satyarthi’s work, one would expect him to be the hotcake for the mainstream media. But the truth stands in contrary. Check it for yourself. If you Google his name and exclude results containing the word “nobel” and filter results before, let’s say 8th October 2014, there is almost no coverage of him in the media. The only articles that appear about him are from his website, a few social pages on Facebook. Times of India did give him some space in June this year but on Delhi City page.

No coverage from any of the leading newspaper columns or editorial. Let’s see what our mainstream media reports on day to day basis.
Political blame game and speculation seems to be the favorite pass-time for our Media. Some Media houses have started prescribing cloths to our actresses. Media has not been fair to Satyarthi. Having said that, can we ourselves escape the blame? Maybe Not. It has been 2 weeks since Satyarthi won the nobel prize. Did we bother to search or read about him, leave alone support his cause. We were so engrossed in Big billion sale by flipkart and Diwali dhamaka my Amazon that we did not care. Media serves to us what we demand. Its time we start asking for right information and hold media accountable.
If Sharapova ,being a Russian, is dumb to not know an Indian star, what are we??
Its NOW or NEVER!!
