Picture this!!! A boy is returning home from Market. On his way back he encounters a mob protesting for something. Out of the blue, the mob attacks this clueless boy and he is bludgeoned to death supposedly because of his attire or appearance. This is no Afghanistan, this happened here in our country last Monday. The boy in question was a 28 year old IT professional from Pune, Shaikh Mohasin Sadiq, and the mob was protesting against some morphed pictures of Maratha warrior Shivaji and late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray doing rounds on social media. This young boy from solapur was mercilessly thrashed with hockey sticks. He succumbed to his injuries.
While disrespecting our leaders is condemnable, killing an innocent boy is no less bizarre. The mob had no idea, who posted these pictures on social media. They assumed that it must be some Muslim and then noticed a Muslim passing by and killed him. How sick!! This lynch mob was allegedly identified as radical right wing outfit, Hindu Rashtra Sena. How Ironical!! They neither understand the ethos of Hindutva, nor do they do their rashtra (Nation) any good. ‘Sena’ they call themselves, when in reality they are a bunch of coward self-proclaimed moral police.
It has been more than a week now. This is approximately the time period when we are programmed to forget the breaking news. Any news, howsoever ghastly, must be erased and replaced by new ones. And I can see the society and media houses moving on. While there was widespread outrage in the public, the sudden demise of Gopinath Munde took the center stage and innocent professional was soon forgotten.
To consider this incident as a tragic aberration is to forget the grim history. On that fateful night, two other youths were attacked. By god’s grace, they survived. 20 people have been arrested so far, but the intent is missing already. Hindu Rashtra Sena should have been banned immediately as there were strong prima facie evidence against them. But the fact is that they might not be banned at all. They wanted publicity, they got it. They wanted some media attention, they have it. They deserve exemplary punishment, but alas, this would elude them!!
It’s not a Muslim who was killed, it was an Indian. It was not a human that was killed; it was humanity at the altar of secularism. This case is rarest of rare; as horrifying as Nirbhaya case if not more. I expect same proactiveness from judiciary and similar support from my fellow countrymen. We can’t let anarchy prevail. Sole bread earner of a family is lost. One can’t imagine the pains and pangs of the parents, let alone empathize with them. Today it was him; tomorrow it can be you or someone you know. Choice is yours- either eradicate these termites from society or live with this perpetual fear.
Its NOW or NEVER!!
