It’s a beautiful world-isn’t it? The Mother Earth gave us everything we have around us here. Yet there is so much to discover in her; we will always keep finding something new. Oh! I missed the world beyond us. So far we have stepped onto the moon; it’s just the beginning. The insatiable desire of man, who on one hand is trying to reduce the universe to a neighborhood, and on the other trying to discover a whole universe inside an atom, shall go on and on. We will be traveling to nearby planets for vacations-maybe an extended weekend trip to the Mars. We will be .That may not be in my life time or yours but our children are going to enjoy these. But when I said ‘We‘ in the above few lines-whom did I refer to? Did I really mean-‘We‘, we the fellow brethren. Absolutely not! By ‘We‘, I meant the lucky few, who are ‘lucky‘ by the virtue of their birth.
‘Not all can be equal‘ is the theory that we all have in our subconscious mind. So while biting into a King size Mc.D burger, we are comfortable with the idea of existence of a million souls crying for food with parched throats. We accept things as they are, because we don’t want to get ‘depressed’ thinking about them, let alone work to improve the situation. Above all we have a sense of privilege to be lucky to be born with golden spoon or atleast a spoon and we don’t want to share that spoon with the hungry.
Time is the most corrosive of all agents in Nature. It erodes empathy to sympathy and then breaks it into bits of ‘concern’ and finally disperses it as ‘apathy’. And we move on, letting things go the way they are – while strictly adhering to the businessman approach of ‘interfering only if you yourself are the victim’ – as taught by our parents. Well, I can’t say – all – but at least my parents taught me this!
This is not just about our nation or any XYZ country in particular. Try recalling the country which you would like to call the land of your dreams – many would say-the US. But, if you Google about the percentage of people living below the poverty line and about their conditions, I don’t know what would your reaction be, but I am sure US would no longer be a ‘place of dreams’ anymore. Try saying that people in the Middle East have lots of money resulting from their oil revenue, I would like to correct you- just ‘some’ people have ‘all’ the money. Why? Because, by the virtue of their ‘blood’, they own oilfields and the others who toil in these all day in the scorching sun earn a paltry sum by the virtue of their ‘sweat’ and the ugliest part is that some of these countries like Saudi Arabia, have taken extreme measures to hide the problems of inequality.
Looking at the huge shopping malls towering all around in our ‘megapolis’ cities, I wonder if those who spent years in its construction, carrying the bricks and pouring concrete, will ever be rich enough to go for a shopping in one of these.
We used to study in history textbooks about Industrial Revolution and how it brought about a divide in the society-dividing the society into the haves and have-nots ,the elite and the peasant, the owner and the worker ,the rich and the poor. We read about the plight of the workers. Ever since, our policy makers and leaders have been working to bridge that gap-to bring about equality -for more than two centuries now. They invented a number of ‘vehicles’ to help the situation-but the ultimate beneficiaries of each one of them were they themselves and the effect that these vehicles were able to produce was-‘narrow domestic walls’ to further divide the ‘weak’ to make them ‘weaker’.
Where to are we headed? I will tell you. I had a vision of the future. It was in a dream last night. The oppressed will rise, not in small groups but as a whole-against all those who they would feel are responsible for their condition. When this happens, hell shall break lose. The French Revolution would look less bloody. There shall be no discrimination between the good and the bad. There will be wide spread terror. Their retaliation will be coupled with the repression by the authorities. Violence would give way to anarchy and unprecedented collateral damage. There shall be no victory for anyone and even if there is one-It shall be ‘Victory with no survivors’. I don’t know if it comes true. I don’t want it to come true. We will be at a loss. By ‘We’, here I do mean ‘We all’.
Its NOW or NEVER!!
