Sorry! this area is NOT under our jurisdiction

The Delhi Police which has access to resources enough to track down a bus from among hundreds of ‘white’ buses within 24 hours-lacks the equipments to contact and co-ordinate with other police stations.Had the two men acted in time, they could have alerted the policemen at various check posts in the area. The girl would have been busy interning by now-(the reason why she was in Delhi),instead of battling for life in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital.

“Sorry Sir,we cannot help you. This area does not come under the jurisdiction of our Police Station”.This was the reply given by the two policemen on a bike to Mr. Ramadhar Singh.Mr. Singh was the man who was robbed of all his money and his mobile phone. This incident took place on the same bus about an hour before the girl was raped on it.He came across the policemen a short while after he was robbed. Had the two policemen tried to help the man,the girl’s case could have been avoided. Moreover, they drove away and the man was dropped home by a three wheeler whose driver was kind enough to do so.The Delhi Police which has access to resources enough to track down a bus from among hundreds of ‘white’ buses within 24 hours-lacks the equipments to contact and co-ordinate with other police stations.Had the two men acted in time, they could have alerted the policemen at various check posts in the area. The girl would have been busy interning by now-(the reason why she was in Delhi),instead of battling for life in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital. But its not their fault-it was ‘NOT’ under the jurisdiction of their police station. We cannot say for sure that it would have averted the rape, but there was a chance. They could have tried. We can only try.The doctors operating on the victim are trying. The victim is trying to keep her spirits high and her body and soul together. The thousands protesting on the streets throughout India demanding justice for the girl and death penalty for the accused-do not know what impact will their voices have on the ears on the Government, but they are trying.God knows whether they will make it.But they are all trying. But these two men on ‘patrol’ didn’t find it worthwhile-because it was ‘NOT’ under the jurisdiction of their police station.

If you have ever lost your wallet or your phone and gone to the Police station to lodge an F.I.R,you must be aware of this problem. You dropped your wallet somewhere in the bus.You do not hope to find it.Its not easy and practically impossible to track down such a small thing as a wallet-unless you are really lucky and a gentleman finds it and calls you up.So,all you want is a proof that you lost your ID Card or your Driving License,so that you can reapply for the same.It is here that the problem starts. You cannot go to any police station and simply lodge an F.I.R. because as soon as you narrate the incident, you are questioned about your time and location at the moment when you found out that your wallet is missing. You tell him-“Sir,it was near the Sector-16 crossing”.Then they ask you, before the crossing or after it.You dont know what to say, because you dont know the exact location. So you say-‘before the Crossing’.Then the famous reply-“Sorry! that area is NOT under our jurisdiction”.So they send you to another police station. Now what are you going to do?In my case I went to the other police station and said that I dropped my wallet just outside the police station-and I made it.I got an F.I.R lodged-it was an accomplishment.
How long can this continue? How many more lives are required to drive the policemen to take measures to enhance co-ordination between them?Well let us hope, the Police learn a lesson from this ‘shameful’ incident in the Capital. To our respected policemen- I would say,the crime committed is not within your area,at times, but its against your countrymen everytime.
