Justice for Madan Naik: first Assaulted on duty;then Detained by Police till he Died

Police made Naik wait for six hours from 4.30pm to 10.30 pm despite the severe head injury he suffered during the assault by the revelers. They shifted him to the hospital only after he collapsed at 10.30 pm due an internal blood clot.

In a bizarre incident that could demean one’s faith in humanity, on 7th of this May Assistant Conservator of Forests(ACF) Madan Naik was brutally murdered; all for doing his job honestly. He, as a forest officer,  was on one of his regular visits, when he found some tourists feeding meat pieces to Crocodiles at Crocodile Park in Dandeli(Karnataka), which might have infected the animals. His attempt to stop them only ended up in scuffle. These goons not only thrashed and assaulted Madan Naik but also abused and assaulted his family members including his wife, daughter and son who were accompanying him. What happened afterwards is even more disgraceful and horrifying. When Madan Naik, approached local police station to lodge a complaint, police not only refused to file a complaint, but also they made him wait for six hours from 4.30pm to 10.30 pm despite the severe head injury he suffered during the assault by the revelers. They shifted him to the hospital only after he collapsed at 10.30 pm due an internal blood clot.

The cover-up act by the local police didn’t end here, an atrocity complaint was filed against Naik.  They also forcefully made the family sign a document which said that family has accepted the apology from the culprits who verbally abused them. There was no mention of physical assault on the first place, and secondly no apologies were accepted. Last but not the least, the irreplaceable loss of a family member deserves more than an apology!!!

The criminal-police nexus is not new; one more honest  officer sacrificed his life at the altar of corruption. There are reports that among 16 accused of crime, there were some police officials as well, hence this gruesome cover up act by the police. Grieving family seeks justice, they want us to share their pains. While the loss to the family is irreplaceable, we must ensure that this life is not lost in vain. There should be speedy trial of the case and culprits should be brought to books at the earliest. We do not want decades of legal battles and turmoils and pangs to the family. These goons are termites to society and don’t deserve to live.

While 10 of the 16 accused are still on run, local police is still in denial mode. Trying to cover up this case once again. If we don’t stand up in support and add strength to the voice of Naik’s family,  this might just be one of the million cases in India were the justice is denied under the weight of power and wealth.
