Every day, a lot of news regarding female foeticide, female infanticide, female genital mutilation, son idolization, early marriage and dowry are reported, but are virtually forgotten and pushed into dark pigeonhole meant for insoluble problems like corruption and poverty. The cases of baby Falak and Afreen are still fresh in our minds. If Baby Falak’s case shocked the nation, Baby Afreen’s case has left us numb. Both these tender lives were brutally battered and tortured by their father and they finally succumbed to death. To consider these cases as tragic aberration is to forget the grim history of our patriarchal society were millions of baby Falak go unreported. If this issue is not resolved swiftly, it will soon take a malignant form. In places like Daman and Diu; there are 618 girls for every 1000 boys; and the condition is getting no better with every passing day.
The hardest possible punishment in life is being a girl child. Discrimination and discrepancy are two most important factors that hamper the journey of every female from the earliest stage of life. Starting from her presence into her mother’s womb to infancy, childhood and finally to adulthood, she is outnumbered by the male dominating society of the country. When she is in her mother’s womb the people around her won’t let her live, if she survives the drama of abortion then comes the discrimination. She is not allowed to attend school instead she learns the household work. When she reaches her teenage, she is always afraid to go out because who knows what will happen and in many cases they are not allowed going out of the four walls of their home.
It is believed that every year 12 million girls are born in the country but unfortunately only 1/3 of those survive. This evil is the outcome of poverty, illiteracy and gender discrimination. The country fails to understand, how a mother can be so ruthless and vulnerable. It is said that God created mothers because He could not be present everywhere. It’s unbelievable to realize that a God’s representative is continuously killing someone beautiful even before she can come out and see the beauty of nature.
A report says:
“In the beginning of December, a program aired on ABC 20/20 about India’s deadly secret. It was about 40 million girls who have vanished. All aborted before they could take their first breath. Their crime was that they were girls.”
The central government has nothing to say in this regard except that they are trying. They have been trying from past 30 years but what is the result. With every day passing the girl sex ratio is declining, and if the trend continues, the day is not far when girls would be hard to find . The programmes are made but they are not implemented. The reason behind this is corruption. To make system the scapegoat would not be fair. We are corrupt. Every person who supports gender bias is corrupt. The system is corrupt because it talks about taking various steps but always fails to do anything.
My dear friends, it’s still not too late to act. Come out of your comfort zone and raise your voice against this issue. A little amount of care, a handful of warmth and a heart full of love for a girl child can make a huge difference.
Close your eyes, free your thoughts and hear the voice of God, He is saying something to all of us, “Save Me”.
