‘La Tomatina’ finds no place in India

Bangalore16th August,2011: Bowing down to swelling protests from various corners of India, Karnataka government on Friday declined to permit the tomatoes festival (La Tomatina) in Bangalore and Mysore scheduled on Sunday. “Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda directed the police in Bangalore and Mysore not to permit the organizers and sponsors to hold the fest in the two cities as it was against Indian culture,” an official from the chief minister’s office said.
La Tomatina, Spain’s highly popular tomato fight festival, has surprisingly  made its way to India. The inspiration to hold the festival in India came from scenes from Bollywood movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The first La Tomatina event, which was to be held in Delhi in late July, was cancelled due to public protest.

‘La Tomatina’ has been in news for some times now in India. Supporters of this event advocate that when so much water is wasted during Holi, and there’s so much noise pollution during Diwali, why should there be  hue and cry on wastage of tomatoes.
Ofcourse there are strong reasons against La Tomatina. Firstly, is it even ethically justified for a country to promote such events where more than 300 million citizens sleep hungry every day. According to estimates made by the World Bank, India ranks second in the world for children suffering from malnutrition. How can tomatoes be thrown for fun when they can be used to feed tens of thousands who do not get a square meal a day in our country!! Secondly, with the ever increasing inflation, rising petrol prices and RBI increasing REPO rates , such events would further screw the common man.

Hyderabad hosted the festival in early August. The festival also plans to take Kolkata and Mumbai into its ambit by the next month. We cant always expect government to jump onto bandwagon and do the rescue act. We as responsible citizens of India, should ourselves judge the relevance of such events in our country. we shouldn’t blindly copy what others do. In the present Scenario, ‘La Tomatina’ finds no place in India.

Its NOW or NEVER!!
