There is no such distinct point in history where and when corruption started or what exactly motivated people towards taking up corrupt means but consumerism and materialism, of course , seem to be very powerful phenomena to promote it and make it a global concern.
Consumerism was actually started by the west , to quote an eminent American Economist Victor Lebow “Our enormously productive economy demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction and our ego satisfaction in consumption. We need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced and discarded at an ever-increasing rate”
Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods and services in ever greater amounts.
In many critical contexts, consumerism is used to describe the tendency of people to identify strongly with products or services they consume, especially those with commercial brand names and perceived status-symbolism appeal, e.g. a luxury car, designer clothing, or expensive jewelry.
This mad rush to acquire, purchase and obtain, makes people to become corrupt and earn that extra buck.Corruption is mainly increased because people have got more money than required, more importantly , non-deserving people have earned money through unethical means quite disproportionate to the amount they actually deserve, these people do not value money and want to buy anything and eveything at any cost. Social status of a person is mapped by the materialistic possesions and the income one has, and on the basis of one’s acts, thoughts and morals.
Its great that Anna Hazare stood for us all, it is even more overwhelming that he is getting such widespread and strong support from all quarters. But, the thing intersting here is if all those people who have come out in Anna ji’s support themselves leave corrupt means half of India’s problem gets solved.
Its NOW or NEVER!!
