The movie Aarakshan is story of Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), the legendary idealistic principal of a college, who is so determined that he has single-handedly turned it into the state’s best. It is the story of his loyal disciple, Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan) who can do anything for his Teacher. The Story is delineated around Deepak’s love for Prabhakar’s daughter, Poorbi (Deepika Padukone) and his friendship with Sushant (Prateik). It is the story of their love, their lively friendship, their penchant for liveliness, and of their grandiose future plans.
Though the story is said to be rollercoaster ride of high voltage drama, conflict & rebellion, which tests their love & friendship for one another and their loyalty towards the Principal, the print and elotronic media is bent upon proving that ‘Aarakshan’ will give air to the casteism and provoke communal sentiments. Unfortunately many leaders and ardent believers of moral policing have joined the chorus and have been supporting these ‘forecasts’. The (so-called ) leaders who think this way, need to take a leaf out of real life’s book. Can they imagine if a movie is capable of giving rise to a riot. What impact could a 49.5% reservation in real life have? And the percentage is bound to increase with every “unreserved” community jumping into the bandwagon demanding ‘Aarakshan’.
Isn’t reservation against the Right to Equality by our hon’ble Constitution. I don’t deny some people or rather a large number of them, in India, require favouritism but they’re mere persons(the no. can be counted on finger-tips) not the whole communities and castes. The favouritism is required for food, clothing, housing & basic education but not for debarring meritorious from selections in competitive exams/jobs. Why a reserved candidate gets the seat to higher education despite being manifold lesser in merit or gets promoted to a higher rank earlier in jobs than an unreserved fellow?
These biases are and shall always promote & help in flourishing of casteism and the day is not very far when it will give birth to youth agitation of which this movie aarakshan is supposed to be a trailor.
Though the movie is still awaited in theaters but the trailers picturise the burning topic in minds of billions of youth today. The director has indeed caught nerves of our dear politicians, who could not resist thinking that movie would prove a curtain-raiser and their truth unveiled midst of the aam janta. Even the sets of Aarakshan were bulldozed.
The society which didn’t wake up from deep slumber during 50 years of damn Reservation, how can they come into action after a mere 3-hour entertainer?? The Director says,” We have tried to tell a story which is kind of therapeutic because it is intended to heal. If it can somehow give everybody his or her solution……but we have not tried to preach through this film.”
If the gap is not plugged-in on time It wouldn’t be wrong to say
”Iss desh mein do bharat baste hain.”
